Black Lion Gastro Pub

One of London's Top 5 Pubs

Our busy gastro pub has a grade II listed interior and a warm welcome. We are open for lunch, dinner and bar snacks as well as drinks and cocktails. We are ideally located by the Tricycle theatre for dinner before or after a show.

Review from Time Out London Bars, Pubs & Clubs 2005/06

Black Lion 'Kilburn's original gastropub has become a benchmark for the High Road's watering holes. The vast, late-Victorian interior has been cleverly updated to create a cosy pub and dining room, with most of the original features left in place - open fireplace, eccentric, gold-embossed ceiling, and wood panelling. Faux antique touches such as silk lampshades and battered leather sofas complete the faded look. The main room is moodily lit with flickering candles and brass chandeliers. It's mostly Kilburn's young and Diesel-clad who come for the good selection of beers (including Adnams and Hoegaarden) and excellent food.'

Review from Kilburn Times, 30 November 2005

Paul Keilthy on searching the Kilburn High Road for bars with longer opening hours as the new licensing laws on all-night drinking came into play in November 2005. He found the Black Lion to be the only open bar: '.. Shimmering ahead of us was the baroque majesty of the Black Lion, and we approached warily, alert to mirages. 'You can certainly have a drink' said the beautiful manageress, 'We close at 12. As normal'. So it was that I sipped a pint as Wednesday turned to Thursday in the relaxed mid-week atmosphere of that Victorian drinking palace'.

Review from The Guardian, 26 November 2005

'Black Lion, Kilburn Great gastro-pub - not the usual dump done up with church chairs, this place is a preserved gem. The ceilings and details inside are worth the trip alone. Has good beers and food, and the crowd is decent too. The area itself has a few other good pubs/restaurants and a great theatre/cinema across the road'.

Review from the Evening Standard 28/01/2004:

'Breathtaking: the Black Lion in Kilburn High Road is wonderfully ornate yet is every inch a local. With the careful restoration of this former workaday pub complete, the wonderfully ornate gilded ceiling and friezes make for a breathtaking spectacle of interior design. The neatly partitioned-off restaurant area is serving some ambitious modern British dishes, whilst the pubby bit remains every inch the locals local.'

Review from Evening Standard Metro Life Magazine 5/12/2003:

The Black Lion has a magnificent interior, and for whatever reason (if the ceilings are not listed, then they should be), the refurb has left most of the good bits well alone. The bar is dark red with swags and swags of ornate gold plaster work. The dining room is dark green, and has more of the elaborate gilt flourishes. Floors are sanded, chairs are comfortable and the lofty ceilings give the place a spacious feel.' 'Chef Pascal Persigout and his team know their stuff.' 'The cooking is spot on - meat is cooked accurately, flavours are upfront and well-balanced, ingredients are well chosen and fresh.'
